Default P0352 engine code?

Hello Everyone!

My 1996 Ranger 2.3L has been running a little rough lately. Yesterday I installed new Motorcraft plugs and Autolite wires.

This morning the check engine light came on. I rented a code reader and it pulled 1 code....

P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

Now what? Do I just replace a coil? Which one?

Thanks very much for the help! I greatly appreciate it!

Well, it's one of them. A lot of times it's the connector where the harness plugs in, I've seen them break several times on these packs. But like the code says, it's a fault on one of the two circuits in the coil.

If just replacing the coil doesn't work, then you move to the harness or the ECU/PCM. But if it just started after changing plugs and wires, it' more than likely a coil.

*edit* To test which one it is, I'd unplug some of the wires on one of them and see if it changes how it runs, whichever one doesn't change the condition of the running of the vehicle would be the one to change.

Find out which one coil B is (probably cylinder two) and swap it with the pack on say cylinder 3. If it now gives you a code that specifies that new location then you can be sure it's the coil itself.

I am confused. his truck has 2 coil packs. I believe the one closer to the firewall operates the passenger side and the one closest to the front operates the drivers side. if you swap the coils I am pretty sure they still fire on the same cylinder, however one side of the engine produces most of the power of the engine. so if you swap the coils and the truck either runs worse or better than you know it is the coil?

like posted earlier if it is not the coil you have an ignition control module that could be the next suspect......my guess is the coil........and as poste dearlier check the main connection on the coilpack!!

Your right. I skimmed the specs and only read the problem. So 1996 registered as 06 were each cylinder has it's own coil pack. So my bad and nice catch. Don't wanna confuse the man!

I was just posting a way of diagnosing similar components by swapping them to separate component failure from circuit failure. Then having the OBD reading tell the story rather than relying on being able to note a difference in the way the engine runs.

I am glad you got it fixed. I bet you had a crack in one of the packs and when you changed the wires it irritated it more. I bet one of those packs is still good bring them to a autoparts store for a free test and or use a mulitmeter and test them your self

and good follow thru with a conclusion post. ti will help others down the road

Thanks modelageek.....

How can I check the old coil packs with my multi-meter?

I'm sure you know but the coils have the 4 "spark plug posts" and three spade connectors for the harness.

Thanks for your help, I'd like to learn how to test these.

page 5-4 in your haynes manual( please don't tell you dont have one or we will have to boot you off the forum) Primary resistance, the one with the 3 spades between the center and one outer less than 5.0 ohms. secondary resistance, where the wires go into the coilpack . you test them in pairs cyl 1 and 4 and cyl 2 and 3 go to gether. you want between 13k and 15k ohms. I have heard that even if they test ok thye could still be bad!.but it will be interesting to see what you have....post your results!

Humm...interesting.

Between the center post and each spade terminal to each side I get .7ohms

Between 1-4 and 2-3 I get 13.14K ohms

These readings are for both coil packs I removed.

Were these coils ok? There is continuity between the two outside spade terminals. Should there be? If center is ground?

those are within spec. I dont know the answer to the last ? about continuity betwtween the terminals

I think they could be within spec and still be bad. maybe they are cracked. an auto parts store can tested them a little better I think.
