Post 97 Ranger idles rough, requesting help.

Hi all, my ranger idles rough and I have tried a few things with no solution. What initially happened was the truck stalled on my wife when she came to idle but was able to keep it running and make it home by giving it gas constantly. When I took a look at it I started it and immediately it shut off. I was able to give it gas and keep it running and sometimes when I let off the gas it would run other times it would run so rough it sounded like something was going to break. The first thing I did was replace the fuel filter and put new fuel in it with a little seafoam and nothing. The check engine light was on and I managed to get it to advance auto and borrow there code reader. It said it was the maf sensor and something with emissions I cant really remember exactly. I replaced the maf sensor and wallah it ran fine, ah I almost forgot I replaced the iac valve and the purge solenoid valve for the charcoal canister but neither one did anything. Back to what I was saying it ran fine for a short time anyways. It started doing the same thing shortly afterwards and I replaced the maf sensor again because I bought it refurbished and I thought maybe it was defective, same thing. I have checked the pcv valve, coil packs, fuel pump (by ear), and replaced the battery since it died on me. I have let the truck sit for a few moths now and the brand new battery I bought is dead so I am thinking there might be a ground or my charging system is not working. This morning I jumped the battery and checked the alternator for good output and it seems to be working properly. So please if managed to take the time to read all this and you have some constructive criticism by all means help me out. thanks.

Have you checked the cylinder compression? Could be a blown head gasket or leak. How many miles does it have on it?

no I haven't, it has about 140 k on it. One thing I have't looked at either is the spark plugs. I know it sounds simple but I just haven't done any thing like that cause they are so hard to get to and on top of that there is eight of them on a 4 cylinder. I guess I find some time and get a compression tester and give that a shot, thank you.

my 2 cents.........I would change the plugs and wires. ONLY USE AUTOLITE OR MOTORCRAFT. it is not all that difficult once you figure it out and if you use the suggested plugs and wires. I have done it twice now with the intake on and if I did it again I could do it in less than 1 hour. you need an extra extension or 2 and a swivel helps a little.

if you have a compression tester it is always good to see what state your engine is in, however I think you would have had a misfire code if it was real bad.

I think you should do a fuel pressure test koeo, koer and see that it does not drop more than 8psi in 5 minutes after the truck is turned off.

it is strange that you get the maf code and it is not the maf...what code did you get?

did you pull the neg bat cable for a while to reboot the pcm?

well I left some things out since its been so long, sorry. I dont get the maf code anymore it was just what it had originally. since replacing everything and driving it (when it did run soon after i replaced the maf sensor) it threw a code for running lean on the left bank. I believe I have disconnected the neg cable and I don't think it has thrown a code since but still acts up.

a little more detail in how it is acting: when I start the truck it runs perfect for a very short period of time and then almost stalls and then tries to recover and ramps up a little bit. It does this over and over and I have noticed that the vapor canister purge solenoid opens and close like a little machine gun. I noticed it does this by itself off and on like it is trying to correct a problem with one of the parameters.

Dude my ranger does the exact same thing, it only dies shortly after I start it and I have to slowing down to stop with the clutch engaged. After dumpin the clutch to restart it, she runs fine till I shut it off. It has to sit for an extended period of time (24hours) for it to die like I already explained.

I have the 4.0 liter, and mine did something similar. It had to do with a dirty MAF sensor. Pick up some MAF cleaner - any major parts store will have this. It is designed SPECIFICALLY FOR MAF's. Don't use anything else because you could damage the sensor. I do that about every time I change the oil, and it stopped. Try that an let me know.

I am not trying to throw you of track but had same problem with my 98 2.5. Run the compression test and see what you have. I had bad valves causing low vaccum and the thing would not run or Idle right.
