To start with unhooking a battery while the engine is running is bad beacuse it puts all the load on the alt, you can kill one by doing this. The acid test is to put a meter on the battery with everything off. You should get 11-12+ volts. Then start the engine and get a second reading across the battery. You should get 13+ volts. The alt is only supposed to be providing enough current to keep the volts up past the 13+ volts, in other words a couple volts... This is OEM, not high performance parts.

Get a cheap multimeter and ohm test the wires, place one test lead on the and the other at the alternator connection.

Didn't really answer the question, why do you think its bad? Is it the dash light or guage saying something is bad?

I know there is a fusible link in the main line from the alternator to the battery. I also think there is a small fuse that protects the control wiring of the alternator and if it blows...no charge.
Battery static voltage should be 12.4-13.0 volts. With alternator running the voltage needs to be 13.8-14.2 volts.

Did you unhook the negative battery cable while installing the new alternator?

Could you tell me how to find that fuse? I popped the cover of the battery junction box, but there is no indication of what each fuse is for. I had no luck searching for a chart online, either. Any help would be appreciated.
