Exclamation Starter grinding on flywheel HELP

Hi guys my 1996 ford ranger 2.3 5 speed. starter bendix went out so I replaced it with a used motor craft one. The starter grinds on the flywheel really bad. Any of you have any ideas what might be its problem. Starter, flywheel, battery are all good. I've also tried other starters the say thing happens.

Yea I'm interested in knowing. Mine does too sometimes and I installed a new starter as well, no fix.

Teeth on the flywheel may be worn out

Wrong starter

I checked the flywheel for broken teeth. I checked the teeth when i took out the old starter. There were none broken. Just had new clutch and slave cylinder put in they resurfaced the flywheel also.

I'd bet it's the starter. Have it bench tested at an Autozone. I got a bad "new" one a few months ago that made an awful grinding noise and it was internal with the starter, not the flywheel

I've bought a new and installed it but it did the same grinding. The starter is grinding against the flywheel I've tried a few different starters including motor craft starter.

Okay. Then your ignition switch sticking? The grinding during the start out after the start?

Needs a flywheel, even though none of the teeth are broken and they look fine. Chances are there not, there worn down enough..

I went through the same thing with a 68' F100 390 sounded horrible when you started it. Then the started wouldn't engage put a new starter on it would fine for a few days then mess up again, put a new flywheel and starter haven't had a problem yet..

And with a 87' Ranger 2.9 it sounded bad when starting it.. Sometimes just grind then got to point where it wouldn't engage.. New flywheel and starter fixed it

It only grinds when I try and start it. It will start the truck. It isn't sticking. For the life of me I can't figure it out. I'm going to try and shim it and see what happens.
