96 Ranger- Starts but will not run
I've got a 96 Ranger, 2WD, 5 speed, 4 cylinder. The truck died a few days back, I had it towed home and discovered some bad vacuum lines, some off and some cracked. I replaced them all and can now start the truck but it will not run. I can keep it going with starter fluid, but it will not run more than a few seconds without it. I've replaced the catalytic converter, IAC valve, cleaned the MAF sensor, and cleaned the throttle body the best I could without removing it. Still, no idle without starter fluid.
I'm stumped. I've tried to pull a code but it is showing none. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

I might suggest you start with the fuel pump audible "hum" test. Similar issue with mine... was the crank position sensor....
All I can do is let you know what happened to ME in regard to the crank position sensor. ( incidentally, my truck is a 2.5 liter). I was driving across the bridge on the way home, and my truck just shut down. No restart. towed it to my mechanic, he put a tachometer on it, and could not get any reading at all. He diagnosed it as a crank position sensor, and replaced it. He did tell me that he had to remove a water neck, where the lower radiator hose went into the block, to gain access to it.

All also, on my engine you can SEE the timing belt. Therefore you can determine if it is intact just by looking.[/QUOTE]

Re: 96 Ranger- Starts but will not run
I changed the timing belt earlier this year. And with starter fluid it runs as smooth as can be so I'm thinking a fuel problem. I installed a fuel pump relay about a month ago and I can hear the pump kick on when I go to start the truck. I haven't checked the fuel pressure.
Could the pump be working just enough to start the truck but not enough to run? I don't want to swap out stuff I don't need to.

Check fuel pressure. If not check the egr valve cause if the egr is no good the truck is no good

Re: 96 Ranger- Starts but will not run
check fuel pump and see if it whines. if not check the relay and swap with ac. if it whines then u have a bad relay very common. also check spark at every plug as the ecm control the coil on 95 96 97 rangers. if u get spark on one coil your secondary might not be getting spark next would be to the coil? last but least would be timing belt to see if its aligned properly.only other 2 things out of box timing snyco top sensor gone bad or crank sensor but i highly doubt that.

It's possible to have the pump operate but not put out enough pressure or volume. If you haven't done it replace the fuel filter.

Re: 96 Ranger- Starts but will not run
The filter is new and I can hear the pump kick on. I'll check for pressure this weekend, and look into the egr valve as well.
Thanks
