Well everything else needs to be up to snuff for proper cooling. I would do a complete real flush, t-stat, and radiator cap. All of which is pretty cheap and you're due for it if it hasn't been done since 2002. The water pump is another component but its more expensive and involved to replace. They don't generally die slowly, they just crap out all at once. Be sure to refill with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and fill the reservoir 1/2 way up too.

Ive been doing some reading on all that, and it seems that my truck's cooling system is unlike most rangers. It doesn't have a radiator cap, it just has the cap on the overflow expansion tank, the thermostat is 150$ and is a unit you have to replace.. I think I'll just flush out the entire system, and take it from there first. It would be nice if it was just a 8$ stant thermostat and a 4$ cap..

I would double check the setup on the Scan Gauge to make sure you are getting an accurate reading. Would hate to go thru all that flushing & replacing parts just yo find out the SG wasn't programed correctly. If it's running hot, there usually other signs. Like pinging under acceleration, smell hot, excess heat when you pop the hood.

Just my 2 cents.

How would you double check the Scan Gauge to make sure the readings are accurate? I want to fix the problem, but like you say, would hate to go through flushing everything and buying 200$ parts for no reason. I haven't come accross any other signs of it getting hot, nothing seems out of the ordinary except the scangauge.

Does anyone know how hot the truck has to get for the OEM gauge to show hot?

Easiest way that I know of is to drive it to a shop that can hook it up to their machine to see if there's reads the same as your SG.

There is a trouble shooting guide on SGs website.

Go thru the settings & make sure it is set correctly.

Did you set it up when you got it or did someone else. It has to be set up for each vehicle it goes on.

I set it up per the instructions in the packet. All the other data seems to be correct. Installing it is really a no-brainier, select engine size, engine fuel type, gas tank size.. etc

hmmm

Yep. Pretty easy. I would double check the engine type setting. You know how computers can be. They are awesome when they are working right.

Called Ford. They said the 02 2.3 comes with a 190 degree therostat. So it shouldn't be running much over that.

Do the reset, and reprogram it.

Mine runs 190, the warmest I've seen was 196.

What reading are you getting for reading for your intake temp? When you are driving, should get outdoor temp reading.
