Default Rattle Noise

Hello,

I test drove a 2006 Ford Ranger 2.3L 2WD automatic last night and it was making an odd rattle noise that was only audible in the cab.

I checked under the hood and under the cab, but couldn't hear anything unusual.

In the cab the noise was coming from the front center of the floorboards.

Here is a video I took. It seemed to get louder and faster sounding as a I accelerated, but it also happened at idle in neutral.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKmqkj9EOuU

A friend of mine said it might be the pilot bearing going bad, but he wasn't sure.

Thanks for the help!

Hunter

Sounds like a drivetrain issue, nothing to do with the engine. Try to narrow down the exact source of the noise. A good starting point is the driveshaft. There should be two u-joints on it, one at each end. More likely than not, that's your problem. Grab the driveshaft and gently move it around to see if there's any play, paying close attention to those joints. While there, inspect the general driveshaft quality. It will be dirty and rusty, but it should not have any dents, dings, or scratches anywhere on it. Even very light damage will effectively ruin it.

Thank you for the response. I can check that out.

It does make the noise in neutral with the brakes applied and it sounds faster the higher the RPMs go.

Maybe an exhaust leak?

Could be something loose too. You have an I4 engine, which is pretty unstable by default. It's gonna vibrate a lot. If metal is ever contacting metal anywhere on that truck, it's going to rattle, especially with higher RPMs. Doesn't matter if you're moving or not.

Easiest way to check for an exhaust leak is to listen for any hissing sounds on the exhaust system. For an easier check, try letting everything cool, and hook up a vacuum cleaner to the tail pipe. Seal up the connection with some duct tape or something, and start sucking. That way, you can try grabbing the pipes to plug up a potential leaking spot without having to worry about your hands getting welded on. Do keep in mind that the muffler and resonator (if applicable) might have little pin holes for water drainage. That is normal. You can put some tape over them to keep 'em quiet while checking everything else if you want, but do remember to take it off when you're done.

I ended up buying the truck last night and today it came out of gear twice while putting around town. Both times I was under 20mph.

I'm assuming the transmission is going out? Any ideas?

Thank you,
Hunter

I don't know why but I checked out your youtube channel after listening to the noise. The Beer Me video was pretty funny. But anyways, why did you buy the truck without getting a mechanic to check it out first?

It could also be a rattling heat shield on the catalytic converter
