Sounds like a drivetrain issue, nothing to do with the engine. Try to narrow down the exact source of the noise. A good starting point is the driveshaft. There should be two u-joints on it, one at each end. More likely than not, that's your problem. Grab the driveshaft and gently move it around to see if there's any play, paying close attention to those joints. While there, inspect the general driveshaft quality. It will be dirty and rusty, but it should not have any dents, dings, or scratches anywhere on it. Even very light damage will effectively ruin it.
