If i replace the filter and try the seafoam stuff and it only helps a little bit what else could be a cause for problems , ive replaced my old fuel pump with a brand new one and i have an engine that is from a 92 ranger i believe that has around 88,000 miles on it

Well how fast are you able to go in 5th gear
the fuel filter is located on the inside of the frame rail on the the drivers side of the truck

i am on my second 97. my first was pretty quick for a 2.3. this one was the same as yours wouldnt go over 70 especially with a head wind. tuned it up, seafoamed it did the air muffler mod still slow. then i stumbled apon the throttle cable mod. i had never really thought about it ,but it was like getting 50 extra hp. its easy and may be free already had zip ties laying around. just look under your dash pull the throttle pedal up look at the top of pedal and you will see a little spring with a plastic assembley.you will also see a little metal thing attached to the end of the throttle cable put zip ties infront of this to act as a shim. this takes up the slack in your throttle cable. allowing you to achieve wide open throttle. i now have plenty of pedal at 70 and 80 the throttle response is amazing its no longer like a wet noodle.

I heard about the throttle cable mod , i also just recently found a website devoted to getting more power and gas mileage out of a 2.3 without making to crazy modifications

One was add a free flow air filter also regarding better gas mileage he took out his catalytic converter and changed it with straight pipe , which supposedly helped the gas alot , but i dont know were i live if i can even take out the converter

Heres the site if anyone else with 2.3 wants more power like me

U need a tune up buddy... 4th gear for me maxed out at 75, then i absolutely had to shift. but catalytic converters are pretty much for the environment, not for you. taking it out or punchin a hole in it will help you run better though. I had considered putting a turbo on mine, though it would sound cool too, just cant afford it.

i need to try the sea-foam stuff. but it really sounds like your cat is plugged, cut the bastard off!!!!! makes the little truck cruise. if u arnt getting any check engine light then i would bet thats what it is. i have trouble keeping mine below 75mph on the highway, also change ur fuel filter.

Im back , i have replaced my fuel filter but i still am having problems with going over 65 unless im going down a steep hill

Today on the way home i was in 5th gear and the highest i could get was 65 like i said and my foot wasent all the way pressed to the floor , well when i pressed my foot all the way to the floor the mph went down to 60 versus going up , and when i let go of the gas pedal a little bit i got back up to 65

And i put in a lucas fuel cleaner in the truck but with no effect

you need to quit putting the truck in 5th. 5th is just for cruising on the highway if you want acceleration put the bitch in 4th and floor it. it will take you all the way to top speed. trust me I have a 94 2.3 to

Well today i left it in 4th i still couldnt go much faster , i know the truck used to belong to a discount store is it possible there could be a governor or something on it

Because still the highest i can get is 65 mph and that is with putting on a new fuel filter

sounds like my 94 2.3l. when i first got the truck it wasnt so bad. i got 22-24 mpg. now i get 14. my damn v8 tundra gets better than that. the ranger is slow really slow. flooring it does nothing! i can stand on the gas pedal and not even max out my rpms.
i ts like the timing is off, but i had it checked and it was ok. i thihnk its a fuel issue

i have replaced the fuel filter, whole exhaust system, plugs and wires, maf, cleaned out the throttle body. i use fuel system cleaners

if you come across something let me know

Sounds almost like no compression. Compression=power.

not wheaties, but cheerios with soy milk threw the intake. the soy burns into a highly combustable fluid while absorbing the vitamins into the seals and scrubbing the cylinders with the cheerios
