It's not boiling at all. The truck does start running rough and missing when the gauge reads hot and the check engine light comes on.

I live in Florida, it rarely gets below 40 degrees here, I don't think it's the freeze plugs.
Your "mechanic" should have put an infrared temp reader on it and/or hooked it up to a scanner to see what the ECT sensor (sensor ecu uses to read coolant temp). He also should have read the codes. I would find a new Tech.

I think the temp gauge sensor is in the head, driverside. Sounds to me like that temp sensor is bad.

go buy a code reader, read the codes, post the actual #'s here.

Fyi. These engines run cool. It's hard to get them warmed up in the winter

You want to use a 190/2 motorcraft t-stat. It is possible to get a code and a crappy running truck when running without a t-stat.

^^^^^^

Does the gauge start off in low when it is cold and then go up to hot after 5 minutes or so?

I am repeating what was said already. If you use a crappy Aftermarket tstat without a bleeder you can develop an air pocket. Air pockets create havoc. Does your heat work?

My first thought....followed by the possibility of the lower radiator hose collapsing (big flow restriction) when the engine is warm and revved at a driving speed. And yes, the engines in Rangers don't care always care for a thermostat brand other than Motorcraft. Also, when you had the radiator out for replacement, did you backflush the bugs and guts out of the A/C condenser?

*If you have an ultragauge, a scangauge or the torque app, you can immediately look at the engine temp. Another alternative is to use one of those IR thermometers.

Can anyone tell me where the ect sensor is located on my truck? I found one that looked close connected to a t on the heater core hose but when I unplugged it it does not match the new sensor I have from advanced. I thought the sender unit is the one that is near the oil filter.

My little truck always ran cool and then one day, out of nowhere, it started to run warm....
I went through what you did and replaced everything and it was driving me crazy!
I lived in San Francisco on Geary about 4 blocks from the beach and when parked on the street, the truck faced the beach.....
One day, I went back out to work on it and dropped a socket which landed in front of the radiator at the lower radiator support and right next to the radiator. I reached down to pick up the socket, the back of my hand brushed against the cooling fins of the radiator and the fins started disintegrating! What the...? I touched a few more areas and the aluminum just dissolved away and I had spots of bare radiator core! I thought about it...
Well, from facing the beach when parked for the past few years, the salt air had corroded the aluminum cooling fins which were not making contact with the cooling tubes of the radiator...
I replaced the radiator and all was good!

Took a couple pictures of my Haynes manual for ya. First one describes the sending unit I talked about in my earlier post. The second picture is the tstat housing. That is the sensor for the computer (red arrow.)
