I am not very fimilar with that engine, but I wonder if the PCV valve is shot? Has a compression test been done to verify that the rings are actually the issue? Can you replicate the problem setting still? Remove the PCV, plug the vacuum hose and see if the problem persists... Could be causing an intermittent vacuum leak, which would cause the idle to increase.
