Default 2003 4Cyl Trouble code P-0172

2003 L4 2.3L DOHC

I have owned this truck for 2 years, however, for 1 1/3 of them my ECM has been giving out the P-0172 code. The first time period where the check engine light was not on, we manually erased the code and it took about 2 months to come back on. The second time the code went away on its own for almost 4 months. now its back.

the code deciphered-

System Rich in Cylinder bank 1

too much fuel (fuel/oil Ratio) toward the front of the block.

Has anyone had this problem before?
Im not sure where to start, any information is appreciated!

Has the truck ever thrown any other related codes like P 0170 or P0174? If so you should be tracking vacuum leaks. If not, your fuel trim is out of spec. Replacing O2 sensor may take care of it.

1) Check airflow. Start by making sure your air intake is cleared. Then check the filter to make sure it isn't clogged. Next, clean your MAF sensor.

2) Check for vacuum leaks.

3) Get a fuel pressure gauge and check your fuel pressure.

Basically, the problem here is that the engine is either getting too much fuel, or not enough air. It's far more likely to be not enough air though. Definitely check the filter and clean the MAF sensor, at least.
