Default Starts and Dies

Hello all
I just bought a 87 Ranger 2 days ago, the problem I am having is it will run while in the crank position and as soon as you release the key it dies. I put a new ignition switch in today. I need to add though that sometimes it will run for several mins and then die again. I have power on both wires on the coil, it has brand new fuel pumps, I haven't checked the fuel pressure but I do have fuel pressure at the shradder valve. I have checked the relays and they are closing. I am at my wits end.

Since it will start and actually run for a while sometimes, and then dies, stumps me...but normally I'd say it sounds to me like the electrical accessory leads (some or all) at the starter solenoid switch might be hooked up wrong? Had this happen to me once while getting in a hurry when changing out a solenoid switch mounted near the battery. A wire that should have been on the battery side of the switch was hooked to the starter side and everything would work fine in the "crank" position, but soon has key was released it would die. As for the ignition switch: Do you have "accessory" position when turning the key? Sounds like the key lock cylinder and gear/rack are out of sync. But if the accessory, off, start & run positions all seem normal on the lock cylinder then you can probably rule that out. Or the switch may need more adjustment? If the rod that pushes the ignition electrical switch is real loose you could have a broken actuator in the column, but usually when they break the car won't even crank.
