Power Steering Pump???
I just bought a '97 Ranger 2.3 ltr 5 Speed. The previous owner told me that the power steering pump was whining and he replaced it a little over a year ago. Well, I don't know whether this is a normal occurance for this model truck or if something is wrong that needs to be fixed. There is no resistance in the steering or anything, the truck just whines through idle and while driving. The whine is directly proportional to the RPM's. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Re: Power Steering Pump???
not saying that you will, but if you do end up having to replace it, dont get a rebuilt one from advance autozone or napa, mine went out and a tried 2 from each store and each one whined louder and put out less pressure than the one i took off that had 130,000 miles on it, ended up having to go to the dealer and pay 3 times as much but its one that works

Re: Power Steering Pump???
Thanks guys, I bled it this past weekend but had no luck. The procedure in my Chilton's book confused me a little. All it said was to disconnect the plug wires and to turn the steering wheel 30 degrees each direction while turning the engine over and add fluid as necessary. Does anyone think if I were to drain the pump reservoir and start over I would have more luck? Or does someone know a better procedure for bleeding the pump? Thanks again.

Re: Power Steering Pump???
Not really, mine is a noisy mofo as well. I may eventually try to replace it but it's not a high priority item since it won't severely affect the operation of the truck if it goes (assuming it doesn't lock up that is).

Re: Power Steering Pump???
I agree Sandman. I drained the entire reservoir, refilled it, bled it, the whole nine yards and still the same whine. I give up on it. It works just fine, just loud.

Re: Power Steering Pump???
My 96 Ranger XLT 5 speed with 92,000+ miles "whines" awful....and even whines, but not as bad, after I add PS fluid. I have to add fluid about every week or so now.
But I can't find the leak. Any advice here........other than replacing it??
I may try ObsoluteE's "Supercharger" comment after reading what another poster had to say about "rebuilt" PS pumps.

I would try the Lucas power steering additive first. I'm usually not a believer in all the additives but after mine went out on the ranger the one on my F-150 started leaking a little and whining really loud and I decided to try the Lucas stuff first and it worked pretty good. it still has a little whine but like everyone said thats just a ford thing.

Re: Power Steering Pump???
Is the PS pump difficult to remove? I understand Advanced and AZ has the tool to remove the pulley..........cost for pump is about $50 + core costs that will be refunded. Advanced and AZ will also remove the pulley for you if you bring the pump in.
It looks like it's a fairly easy job..........but "looks" can sometimes can be deceiving.
Does anyone have any comments this job being easy or difficult + getting a rebuilt one from AA or AZ?
I like doing as much as I can on my vehicles.

Re: Power Steering Pump???
Well you have to remove the pulley before you can get the pump out. the mounting bolts will hit the pulley before they will come out (at least thats the way it is on a 2000). advance has the tool to get the pulley off in their rental tools. it is easy to use but it just takes time because there is not much room to work. and read my first post on this thread if you want to know my opinion on the rebuilt pumps. but overall the job is not that hard at all, just take your time and bleed it right when youre done.
