X2, it's not hard, just time consuming with a little bit of a learning curve. Make sure you lube the pulley with something before reinstalling it. I used while lithium grease, otherwise the friction gets to be too much and the pulley won't install all the way. Autozone sells a pulley puller/installer kit for about $20.

Others have tried the after market PS pump and they were just as noisy or noisier than the one that was replaced. I would recommend going with the OEM pump. Yes, it's more expensive but worth it.

I have that annoying whine (turbo charger) too. I tried to bleed under vacuum and had little success. Here is a link on youtube of what I tried...may work for you.

My power steering in my 97 ranger 4.0 stopped working after getting my front end stuck in snow. The fluid is still full but I have no power steering. Please help I cant find any leaks or obvious breaks.

Very Odd MrJacob, It is possible that some inner seal has broken within the pump or even that the incorrect fluid was added (I fixed my pump by bleeding and adding high gauge pneumatic fluid). That said, the belt that drives the pump is not turning, or is so loose that it slips, this may cause that. It seems that would be pretty obvious though. If you have no leak and the belt is not the issue, I would replace the pump. Pay the extra few bucks and be sure to get a good pump to avoid the squeek.

How do I remove the pulley on a 96 Ford Ranger 2.3 power-steering pump? I have the tool from O'Reilly's but not sure how to remove the pullly. Which hose is the high pressure hose? Top or bottom.

----------

I put in two bottles of Lucas PS pump fluid. It sealed up a bad leak and the whining is gone mostly. I had to replace the water pump today so I'm going to pull the PS pump tomorrow and change it out while everything is out. Any suggestions would be great on that nightmare. Where is the high pressure hose located? Top or bottom? What trick is there to getting the hoses out and how the hell do I use this tool to remove the pulley? It's a renatl but noone at the store knew how it worked. Sucks for me. Glad I'm smart but your help would be better. Thanks.
