Default Is it my Timing Belt or Fuel Pump? Or something else?

Hello Everyone, I just bought my first ranger, it's an 06 Xl 2.3 and I'm trying to get my general maintenance done before I can take it to the river. I'm having an a couple of issues that I think have to do with either the fuel pump or the timing belt, maybe something else but that's why I'm here.

Right now the issues I'm having are as follows:
  • Shaking when Idling
  • It takes two to three key-turns to start the car
  • I hear a whinning, Winding sound when you accelerate from a stop, stops when it gets to second gear

If Someone can please give me some insight as to what the issue is I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you!!

If the timing belt is broken it wouldn't run at all... When was the last time the fuel pump and filter was changed?

I'm not sure I'll have to check the carfax on it because I just bought it a couple of weeks ago. The only reason I posted timing belt was because online it said that those symptoms are ones that mean the timing belt is on it's way out.

2006's don't have a timing belt, it's a chain, should last for a long time. How many miles are on it?

I have a 96 B3000, 3.0 and it ended up being the timing chain. There are a few tests to verify that is the problem. I put a timing light on and the timing varied by 6-8 degrees as far as I could tell. I then took it to a mechanic shop and they diagnosed it as timing off. Mine has a chain and yours may have a belt. If the belt is worn/loose, it would show the same symptoms. I am just a backyard mechanic, so do a lot of research. That is my advise. Check the fuel pressure to verify if the problem is in the fuel delivery. I had 40 lbs of pressure at the fuel rail.
Oh yeah, Do you have an engine light on? Check for codes first. Free at parts house.

I need help!

I broke my oil pan gasket where the tiiming chain meets the pan. It is a 3.0, 4x4, MT. Is there a quick fix or do I have to pull the engine and replace the pan gasket which appears to be one piece.?????? HELP.

Thank You very much, ya at first I assumed it had a timing chain but I did more research and it said that the 2.3 of that year uses a belt, I'll definitely test the timing and the fuel pressure and go from there, Thank you!

I just looked at Silver State Ford Parts, it has a chain, your's should have the same engine as my 08, it's a dohc duratech. So, I would also check the timing and fuel pressure, but I'm thinking it's probably your fuel pump on it's way out

I'm not sure how many miles the chain is good for? I've heard they last a long time. I have a friend who has a Taurus, different engine, but it has 260,000 mile, original chain.

100,000 miles? Ok thanks, I figured they would last longer then that!! Might as well have a belt!, They are usually easier to change.

Has anyone replaced a timing chain on a V-6? I broke my oil pan gasket where the chain cover meets the oil pan.

Those chains are notorious for actually being problematic I thought the healthy expectancy of one is supposed to be between 85,000 - 100,000 so it may not hurt to change it out because as previously mentioned, they can cause problems including varying timing. Just get in there and start tinkering.

I'm still leaning towards a fuel pump getting ready to give up
