I just got a 01 ranger 2.3L a few weeks ago, the check engine light was on when i got it. a few days later i filled it up at a shady gas station and then parked it for a day the next day when i started it it started shaking. when i would rev it it would settle down a bit. so i decided to start with the spark plugs and that seemed to settle it down a bit. But it still doesn't have much power just starting out. then today i was speeding up into traffic and the check engine light started flashing.

Anyone have suggestions. Do you think I'm looking at spark plug wires or something worse?

Well, sounds like the EGR or an O2 sensor just by reading...

Did you get the gap on your plugs correctly? Or better, what kind of plugs did you put in?

I found that the fords I've owned are very picky about plugs...

Have you changed plug wires??

If so, Depending on mileage, it might be a good thought to replace the coil packs...

just a few things to consider

I did not set the gap I just did it on the road and did not have the tool nore did I know what the correct setting is. Do you think the EGR is more likely than the plug wires?

Sounds to me like you got some water in your tank from the gas station. MY wife's explorer did the same thing a few weeks back. Buy some Seafoam add it to your tank. That did the trick for the wife's explorer.

did you drive the explorer while the check engine light was blinking?

P.S. i used a motorcraft platinum plug. I'm on honduras and my parts are somewhat limited.

that plug is fine, it is not your egr that wouldn't make it fis fire, sound like bad gas or a loose plug wire

The checkengine light on my wife's explorer stays on. I have a code reader and have tried to figure out exactly why it stays on. I have even cleared it but it keeps lighting back up. I haven't really noticed a difference in performance, even on long trips.

well it was a bad coil. i pulled the wire off the #1 Cylinder and nothing changed. so i replaced it and it is working great, however in the process i think i caused another problem. i went to control the A/C and it will only blow out the defrost vents. so i looked and there is a small round cylinder near the coils and it looks like it should have a hose to it. but the hose that appears to go to it is just sitting there. when i tried to re connect it it broke into bits. it is very brittle. where does the other end of that hose go and how hard is it to replace?

PS i had a guy hook it up to a scanner and it looked like a 30-40 dollar scanner, are these good? do people recomend them and are they as good as the expensive ones?
