'91 ABS dump valve/ brake proportioning valve?
Hello! I'm new to this forum and truck forums in general. I love my 1991 Ranger, bought it 2 years ago off craigslist for 600 bucks. It's had a host of problems since then and I've paid a small fortune to fix them over time. Usually stuff with rear brakes. Just had the entire rear brake system redone 4 months ago, replaced the transmission about 6 months ago. All in all I can't afford a new truck but can afford a bunch of ridiculous 500 dollar fixes spread out over time.
The new problem is that my ABS dump valve (brake proportioning valve) has a leak. My mechanic is saying that the part is impossible to find and he's never seen it go out on a ranger. He found the part for like 700 dollars but says it isn't worth it with labor. My question is:
Can I ask him to bypass it? Is that possible? Or safe, even? I use it as a work truck but occasionally take it on the interstate. Alternately, can I get this part at a pull-a-part?
I apologize for just jumping in to asking questions. It's hard finding a mechanic/ solid advice in New Orleans. I'm a 25 y/o woman and feel like I'm probably being financially taken for a ride all the time because I look like I don't know anything (they're right...). I don't want to scrap my truck over a small problem but can't pay 800 bucks. Help!
