Default New to rangers, '89

I am going to an automotive school and I have a 89 ranger that could use some work.. I am going to be taking the engine out and rebuilding it for a project, I was wondering If anyone has any info about N/a builds. I know a lot of people turbo these motors but that is not an option. I dont want to go f/i. What is available for parts and where are good sites to buy from? I have a hard time finding real parts theres too many general websites.. I have a Kia spectra also and which I am much more familiar with as far as upgrades..

I was thinking better pistons, maybe a 2.5 head?

I/H/E?

Plugs, wires

I also want to fix the tranny it shifts hard i will probably find one out of a junkyard or fix it depending on whats wrong.

I am not familiar with these engines at all so bear with me

How much hp could I expect to gain from:

Ranger Round Tooth Pulley kit
Under Chassis Header
Cast Iron Holley Manifold
Cam Kit for stock valves
2.25" exhaust

Also, if I need to replace the transmission what would you recommend? Are the 4 speeds particularly weak, would it be better to go with a 5 spd?
