No, the lower you run that engine at speedwise the better mileage you get, your computer takes car of all that. That's why they tell you to accelerate gradually, avoid full throttle passing, and people that drive freeway often by smaller gears to run a lower RPM. I run my Sonoma in 5th gear (it's a five speed the Ranger isn't) all the time. I get better mileage that way
