Huh?

Just rotate the crank with your finger over #1 plug hole until you feel compression then continue to TDC then line up your timing marks on your cam sprocket.

I guess I don't have the right size fitting for my compression test gauge, so I couldn't do the compression test.
But I went ahead and took the valve cover off, made positively sure the cam was in the right spot, made sure the crank was right on TDC, made sure the oil pump marks were lined up, then put it all back together. Started it up and it actually ran. It ran for about 3 seconds then died. So it still doesn't run. Put my OBDII tester on it and it's not throwing any codes.

But I did some poking around in there and found something off. There is a big gear looking thing on the back side of the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). Well I noticed that gear is missing one of its teeth. I also noticed what appears to be the crank position sensor, rides on that gear. So I was wondering... Do the teeth on that gear tell the crank position sensor where the crank is at and in turn tell the ignition coils when to fire? That's the only thing I am coming up with is that the ignition coils are not firing at the right time.

Any ideas?

I just found out that the gear thing I was talking about is called the Trigger Wheel. I looked up the symptoms of a trigger wheel with broken teeh and it's pretty much what I'm experiencing. So now I'm having a difficult time finding one. Does anyone know where I can find the part number for this?

Here is a picture of my trigger wheel with a broken tooth.

Is it part 6306 in the attached pic? If so it appears the PN is F1ZZ-6306-A

Edit:

Attachment resized it, here it is from my photobucket

No that's not it.
See on that crank pulley in your picture how it looks like there are teeth on the back of it, that's where this trigger wheel is. But that diagram is a different crank pulley than what's on my 1996 2.3L.

I went to a ford dealer yesterday but I guess they are closed on Sundays. I'll go back during the week. But it looks like I might have to scour the local junk yards for one lol.

I attached a picture of the pulley in your diagram.

You probably have it 180 degrees out or a bad camshaft timing sensor. Had the same problem a month ago on mine. Took it to the shop and let them do the work. But mine was a cracked pack,180 out, and a bad sensor. Good luck man.

Hi there to All,

Have also broke a Timing Belt, sent it to replace at a Mechanic. Car ran perfectly for a couple of months, but afterwards started with grinding noise when starting. Broke 2 New Starters and one Flywheel. Replace all with new ones, but it keeps hitting the flywheel / starter when starting. Once started, truck ran like a pro. Idle @ around 700 to 800 rpm without any stalling nor knocking.

Last, Could really not start without pressing the full throttle to the floor.
Remember that when it was at the Mechanic, they also replaced 1 coil, because it stared to idle rough. So decided to replace the 2nd also with a new one.

So decided to check out the car myself with the help from a friend who has more experience working on cars.
We replaced some sensors, Fuel pump, but still no success.
Last I decided to dismantle the full Intake Manifold cause I felt and thought that the Injectors were leaking. Discovered the EGR line on the Intake Manifold was blocked causing me a Check Engine Light.
Upon fixing all, and starting, got the same issues.

Source for issue:

Friend told me to verify " FIRING ORDER OF THE SPARK PLUGS ON BOTH COILS"......and Man.......That was the Culprit of All my Issues.......
The day the Belt was replaced, they changed my firing Order on both coils.

The moment I put them back to the normal order, Every Issue was Resolved. No more hitting or grinding on Flywheel, nor starter.

A simple stupid Overlooked item that was caused by a helper of the Mechanic that cause me some money and months before it got fixed.

So Again, PLEASE CHECK YOUR FIRING ORDER ON BOTH COIL PACKS.

Check this site:

Hope this would help you out there.
