89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
i was on the interstate and the engine just died without any warming signs. motor just turned off. 89 ranger, 2.3L, 5spd manual, 2wd.
The rpm still registers...
i replaced the ecu...it was heavily oxidized
the icm was tested at oreily's and passed
the ignition packs are good
i checked and replaced the two large 30a and 60a fuses in the engine bay.
the truck turns over quickly like normal just no spark from the plugs on either side.
the starter relay is good..
no antifreeze in the oil..
fuel pump turns on and primes when i turn the key...
what else should i check? are there any in-line fuses or other relays.
please help...only vehicle right now....

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
did you check the inertia switch on the passanger side footwell on the firewall? my 86 would randomly trigger sometimes and it would kill the engine. just one more thing to check if you havent.

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
my outer timing cover is broken. i cannot find one anywhere. ebay, lmc, jcw, autozone, or napa. its the outer plastic belt cover. the inner is still in great shape without any signs of leakage. this truck is a $600 dollar work truck and i dont drive it alot, mainly in town to and from work.
my question is, can i drive this without the outer plastic timing belt cover? like i said, if the truck last another year or two ill be happy. i put maybe 5-7k miles per year at most.

also... where the truck is parked i cannot get my impact to it. would you advise the jumping the starter trick to get the bolt loose on the crank pulley?

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
on the timing marks its real simple as lonk as you have some of the cover. the cam arrow points down at the right hand corner you should see the mark on this inside plastic. The oil pump pully points straight up and down there should be arrow on it to just point arrow straight up. the crank also is marked and it points top but to the right just a little bit but you can always bring #1 piston to the top and it get at TDC

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
my haynes book doesnt indicate which cylinder is #1. what is the cylinder number from the front back? would it be the cylinder that the spark plug wires go to from the coil packs. they are numbered 1-4.

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
push the truck closer to your tools.. call a few buddies.. you can pull out spark plug #1 to check for top dead center or they sell a whistle you can put in the number #1 spark plug hole to find TDC.. My 89 did the same to me on freeway.. lost timing belt.. then couldn't get winch to work so the state police helped to push it onto trailer for me with their tahoe... fixed and drove trk til 135k.. sold for $1200

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
It is more fun to pull #1 spark plug and insert finger into plug hole and slowly crank the engine over by hand. If it sucks your finger in it's not TDC. When it blows your finger out of the hole you got #1 TDC

Re: 89 ranger will NOT START, ignition, start,
thanks. i havent every really messed with timing. especially with older fords. i do mostly suspension work. so all i have to do is install the belt.
make sure piston 1 is tdc along with the proper position of the other two timing pulleys and im set.
can you offer any precautions or things not to forget.
the rangerstation.com engine specs shows tune up to be 10 degrees btdp. do i need to apply that when align the crank timing belt pulley to the plastic cover.
