Default 2.3L auto transmission problems

hello, I'm new to the site and was hoping someone could help me out. I was driving my ranger the other day and noticed some smoke behind me, I was about half a mile from my friends house so I decided to drive there and see if I could figure it out. about 200 feet from his house it stalled out I restarted it and drove it into his driveway. I checked under the truck and the entire underbody was covered in automatic transmission fluid. the truck still runs and drives but I left it there and jacked it up. from what I can tell I believe its the front transmission seal leaking. Its a 1994 Ranger with an automatic transmission. I was wondering if anyone knew the specific name of the transmission so I can look it up and see how much they cost.

any ideas on how much this would be to fix, I'm guessing I need to replace the transmission and torque converter. I know a bit and was also wondering how hard of a job this would be to do myself or if I should leave this to the professionals.

thanks.

Im not sure with it being a 94 but it may be the A4LD.... if so, you will be better off and probly cheaper doing a 5 speed swap

is a 5 speed swap hard to do, is it cheaper because the transmission is so much cheaper?, I called my mechanic and he said for just labor it would be about $150-200

its beacuse the A4ld is junk and will keep failing, I have oned several, in mustangs, rangers, exploere and thunderbirds.. they all seem to fail about 140-160k and rebuilts seem to last about 15-20k I have had them rebuilt from shade trees to nat'l chains

the avarage price to have one rebuilt with a new torque converter and have it R&R is about $1200-$1600

If you do decide to go this route, get a written warrenty to cover the labor of R&R and fluids

front pump seal is a common problem on the older a4ld. from the sounds of it the tranny has never been out of the truck. there is better replacement parts to fix this common problem from sonnax. go to explorerforums.com an check out there tranny section, they have a lot of how tos an pics of working on the a4ld an quite a few tranny gurus that are willing to walk you threw the problems.

thanks, the truck only has 95k miles on it, I actually threw some more transmission fluid in there and drove it home, a distance of about 2 miles, it would rev up then slam into gear then slip out and rev up again. idk if I should fix it or sell it and just buy a new car. I have 2 motorcycles that I've been driving, Might just make the truck my summer fixer-upper project.

if its leaking from the front pump, the pump bushing has most likly spun, sending metal flake thu the trans, lord only knows what else has burnt up.... but you will need a new front pump, and torque converter and a full tearbown of the trans and valve body, clean everything (including the trans cooler)

ya bogus is right at this point theres going to be shavings everywhere in there. either you rebuild or replace it with a junk yard replacement but blow out the cooler lines to get the junk out of em before you fire it back up with the replacement.
