Question About buying a 1997 2.3L 4Cyl Ranger

I just found a 1997 ford ranger step side bed, short bed, standard cab. I went and seen it today, it looked real nice had not much rust, and in good condition. But the fuel gauge does not work, a shackle might need replaced sometime soon, and the front rims need re beaded. The ranger is a 4 Cyl 2.3L automatic, and has 104,000 miles. the guy was asking $2,500. I was wondering what you think of the price and the truck? Also do ranger have touchy steering? because of there short wheel base, or could there be something wrong with the one i might but in the front end? Thanks, all help is appreciated.

I paid $2500 last May for 97 XLT 2.3 5 speed longbed reg cab with 98500 miles. The price seems about right. As far as your concern about the steering, more info is needed.

I paid $3500 less than a month ago on a 1997 XLT 2.3 Stepside 5 speed with 69,000 miles on it.

Price is good for the truck, but without more info, we can't tell if the truck is good or a pile.

prices are hard to determine without seeing the truck.......inho the trucks in the years you are looking at are all going to need some work. I would look at craigslist and see what is available. the shackles and hangers on the these trucks rust out, the slave cylinder for the clutch is internal and a weak part of the truck. the brakelines get rusty at that age depending on location.

I'm still nursing my slave cylinder @ 232400 miles....she's kinda bitchy on cold mornings/ first thing in the morning....sometimes a double clutch is required.

Other than that I have no complaints from mine.

I just bought a 97 xlt 2.3 liter 5 speed, standard cab shortbed with 133,000 for $500 cash dollars, lol. I think the slave needs replaced, or a clutch master cyl. I haven't got the truck yet... my co-worker I bought it from is waiting to get his new ride first.
Also, it needs tires. No rust on the body, just some scrapes and a few dings. Interior decent, just needs cleaned. I will do some before and after pics of it, once I get it and detail it.
The truck has had brakes, muffler, clutch, shocks and complete tune-up within the last 2 1/2 years. Don't know why the slave wasn't replaced with the clutch... although it may have been. Gonna do the master cyl first, and see if that cures her. If not, tranny comes out... ugh..
Just couldn't pass it up for the price.

Ok, so what is the secret to getting the trans out past the flange of sheet metal from the firewall? A friend of mine who is going to assist me has done one before (not sure what year) and says that where the firewall hung down prevented him from totally disconnecting the tranny from engine by sliding it backwards. Said he had to turn trans like 90 degrees and things to get it to come out.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a fair deal to me. I just bought a '96 XLT 5-speed 2.3 reg. cab 3 weeks ago. One owner, 83,000 miles, straight body, everything worked (but the fuel gauge), never wrecked, clean car fax, etc.. Paid $2250

The check engine light didn't work and there was no current inspection sticker, which made me think I might spend another $600-800 fixing it up including new tires. Maybe.

I have sense spent $1900 fixing it up, which included:

replace burned out check engine light
new tires
new serpentine belt
new water pump
radiator flush, both hoses, serpentine belt, and thermostat
fuel pump
gas filler neck
gas cap
plugs and plug wires

You just never know when you buy a vehicle this old, even with low miles. And just today, the odometer stopped working.

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably try to get a newer truck that had a current inspection sticker for $4K or so.

Iwould only recomendbuying a used truck like thisif you canfix it yourself. Idont know what the fuelfillerneck costs but the otherstuff is about $600 anda couple of easy Saturdays. None of that work was to difficult either. You probably need a Vss in thedifferential forthe speedo. $20 and 20 minutes
