Default 2.3 shuts down when 4500rpm is reached

I have a 88 2.3l 4cyl super cab ranger it runs like a top unless it gets over 4500rpm and kick in i guess what is the rev limiter. heres the problem if u hit that point its like it backs the rev limiter down to a lower rpm like 2750rpm and it needs 3500rpm before shift to have power and quick accell. is that normal and is there a way to fix it. i considered an aftermarket ignition and distributer to bypass the rev limiter but its $300 and i wanted to hear some of your thoughts b4 i start throwing money at it
it has cold air intake a mustang head, msd coil new fuel pump(thought that was the problem first)

that is not a rev limit, you have something else wrong you could try swapping all the parts from a truck in the bone yard to see what may be causing it. that yould be a cheap way to find out

when it does happen its like u just turn off the key until the lower rpm is reached and it will do it again if u try to rev it past 2750rpm unless u drive it slow for several min then its like a race car again. do u think the problem is in the fuel or spark or even the computer? i just want an idea of where to start

look for loose wires bad ground, can you ever rev it to 5000? does it happen all the time. if so then you don't have a short it has to be somthing broke or worn, look at fuel filter

u can only rev it to 5000 if u push in the clutch and do it but it starts to mess up at 4800 it only swings past because there is no load and it winds up faster. already replaced the fuel filter.
I had sombody suggest this, the spout connecter for the timing was missing when i got the truck i just crimped the wires together to make it run. they said there was a resister there and it being bypassed might be the problem could it ?

Its Fixed It runs like a lil tuner car now. There were many problems i found. but one made a big diffrence. the fuel regulator was stuck so the pressure didn't go up when u gave it gas. fixed that last though. here's what i found first. The fuel and ECM relays the wires were melted next to the plug and they were touching on both. The EGR valve was stuck partly open.
