I had a similar issue with my Mustang. Clicking from the ECU and no start. It was a dead battery causing it. I know you said it has a new one in it, but I would attempt a jump start.

Headlights do not work. Nothing seems to be "live" besides that relay that was clicking.

Today is a snowstorm, so I get to work on it in this joy..

I am leaning towards a failed ground, or coroded wires, so I am going to try a jump start to see if the extra power can make it start. it acts as if there is no connection between the battery and the system. I will post updates after I go at it for a bit.

I agree. you most likely have a ground/wire issues. Do the wiggle tests on the battery cables to battery post connections. Check grounds....the module is the ABS module.......not positive what the relay is for. I think it is either the multifunction relay or the delay relay........I think the reason you are hearing the relay is because it is is the delay relay and you are getting some juice and that activates it.....just a guess!!

The jump starting is not going to really work.....it might start for a second but it not stay running consistently......you need to find the bad wire or connection.....

Okay made some progress. Noticed a lot of corrosion on battery positive. So I cut the wires a inch back. And put a new terminal on the positive side. Negative has no xorrosion. Car now operates normally. But will not start

I can smell gas when cranking long enough. And the starter sounds 100% normal.

So I think ignition ignition control module or cps. My scan tool indicates 200-215 rpm as it cranks. So I am leaning to icm but unsure how to check this or check for spark. Snowing hard so taking a break for the night

The ICM is in the pcm. They never fail. Just for giggles check the timing belt. Any codes?

What do I need to pull off to check the belt. And no codes pulled up. Where is the pcm?

Check all of the grounds.to check the timing belt pull the plastic cover at the front of the valve cover back. The belt will be plainly visible where it loops over the cam gear. If you only see the metal cam gear it's broke.

Arent timing belts usually covered... that would be serpentine unless rangers are different. Yup going to check the ground tomorrow and will see what happens. What else could it be though?

I edited my post. They are a covered serpentine belt.

Will definetly check that but I believe electrical gremlins are at work.

Okay sunday update: I read the 'inertia switch' located under the passenger dash would cut off the fuel pump when it is not depressed. checked this switch, pressed it in although it seemed like it already was in... don't think this is the source of my issue:

I took the bottom of under the steering dash so I could see the lock cylinder, does anyone know which wire is responsible for sending the signal to start spark? I wan't to try to hotwire the car and see if it will turn over that way, I have a feeling something is messed up from when the lock cylinder turned more than the 4 spaces, OFF, ACC, ON, Start. the key acts normally now but I am leaning to a no spark situation.

I am unsure how to check for spark? it is the type of 4 cylinder ranger with 8 spark plugs. Is there a starter "Relay" on this truck? I do not see one near the fender? We are having the truck towed to our garage so I can check the fuel pressure above sub zero temperatures... hopefully I can figure this out. after cranking for a minute the smell of gas is apparent but not strong and I have read I need 35PSI of fuel pressure to start the truck. so i will splice in and see what it actually is recieving. we have never had a fuel related issue with the truck though..

I have a similar problem with my truck. 2002 with the 3.0. I have the same clicking noise but it's coming from the auxiliary relay box next to the steering column. When it's clicking I have no power at all. The battery needle barely moves. It is clicking even with the key out. I unplugged the number 26 fuse and the clicking stops. I went to check which relay it was and I hit the brake pedal and it stopped and I had power again. It does this once a day. Also the radio shuts off and resets every time. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

I just started having this problem with my 02 Ranger, it started with my radio resetting a couple of days ago. I went out to try to start my truck this morning for work and I heard the same clicking from behind my radio and under the steering column. I took out the 20amp radio fuse and the clicking stopped, I got full power back. I'll check it tomorrow again before work to see if that was really what it was but so far it's fixed my problem.
