Default Near stalling on start up.

i have a 01 4x4. everything stock. when i start my truck it starts, then it de accelerates real low rpm's and sounds like it's about to stall. it's yet to actually stall, but it's been close. the lights dim along with it. but if i'm in the truck and ready, i can hit the gas right quick and it won't do it. And after it gets started and runs for a couple seconds, the truck runs fine. nothing is wrong. it's all just on the start up. Anyone know anything about this?? it's always kinda done it, but it's gotten way worse in this first winter i've had it.

Falco,

How many miles do you have on it? How long has this been going on? could be bad gas if it just started recently. have you checked your air filter to make sure its not clogged up? Have you changed your fuel filter within the last 20,000 or so miles? If it has a little debris built up, it may cause this hesitation you are talking about.

also...
spark plugs (if you havent changed them recently, or if you have, check them),
If you have never cleaned the throttle body, and mass airflow sensor, then do a search on this forum and read about doing that. Pretty easy to do and can sometimes fix a small problem like this.

My last thought...How old is the battery? Doubt it is electrical but put a volt meter on it when off and it should read a little over 12 volts and when its running, it should read higher, preferably about a volt higher.

Sorry for all the random thoughts, its just tough to diagnose without knowing any of this.

thanks for the feedback man. Umm it's always kinda done it.. so i don't think it's gas related. it has about 58xxx on it. i just put in a k&n air filter so i don't think it'd be that.. The fuel filter and spark plugs haven't been changed to my knowledge. i bought it used in May. And i haven't cleaned the throttle body and mass air flow sensor. And like you i don't really think it's the battery.. I don't know how old it really is, but it's good. i think. haha. Thanks for the help.

Well, for me, having just bought my Ranger a month ago, I try the cheapest fixes first before spending cash where it isn't needed. With that said, I would consider changing your fuel filter and spark plugs.

Also, if you are comfortable with doing the filter and plugs I'm sure you can clean the airflow sensor and throttle body. Didn't take me more than an hour to do both. Make sure you buy the right cleaners if you decide to do this. They are about 5 buks per can for each job and you can clean them every 15,000 miles or so.

The best thing about doing this stuff is that even if it doesn't fix it, you are doing maintenance that needs to be done anyway. I always buy used cars but I hate not knowing the full maintenance history. By doing these jobs now, you can be sure that its not an issue and move on to another possible cause.

Mine used to do that. It idled weird and at low RPM's for almost a year at start up, turns out my alternator was slowly going bad.
