96 4.0 4x4 if I wanted to shift into 1st or rev I had to turn the engine off and just didnt use the clutch for all the other gears

Could be a slightly bad pilot bearing.

I had a really bad pilot bearing, change my clutch/bearings a month ago & it shifts better then my brothers '11 4.0 5spd.

Signs:
First 10minutes of driving: Very smooth/easy shifting.
Next 10minutes: Hard to shift into 1st/R, or any gear for that matter at dead stops.
After 30minutes: Very very hard to shift from a dead stop. And very hard to shift while moving in all gears upshifting.

Did this for like 1-2year. It started out it would only do this after 2hours of driving, few months later would do it after only 1hour of driving. Last few months only 20-30minutes. Pretty much started few month after a clutch/bearing change.

What happen (or what I ALWAYS thought what was happening) is the pilot bearing would heat up while driving, bearings/balls in the pilot bearing would expand from the heat & not allow the bearing to rotate. Therefore LOCKING the engine and transmission together. Which explains why I could shift clutchless very easy even when it wouldn't shift with using the clutch. The pilot bearing was acting like 2nd clutch that couldn't be released (untill it cool down over night). Even tho the clutch & bearings were only 1-2years old.

I couldn't really confirm this, but new clutch+bearings fix the issue and explains it perfectly.

Whats odd about this? There isn't one reported vehicle (of any type/make) of a pilot bearing failing in this way. Kept thinking it was my tranny/syncros, BUT since it shifted perfect fine when cold & fine clutchless, it couldn't of been the tranny.

Why am I explaining all of this? There are many different ways bearings (such has the pilot/throwout) can go bad. Some very rare and odd ways like mine. Which no one could give me a good answer, and people kept blaming the tranny and master/slave but didn't sound right to me. And I was right.

Edit: I thought you said you couldn't shift in 1st or R. Nevermind my point doesn't really apply to 5th & Reserve

Can't be pressure plate nor slave, if they work on other gears, then they are fine. Its either your synrcos for those gears (can you force it in those gears?) or the shifter connections to the tranny. Maybe a loose bolt, or worn bushing, or the fork/rod/ball/connection is disconnected/loose for 5th & R, since they share the same link.

that helps a bunch actually. mines smooth for about 30 min of traffic maybe 25 then its a pain to shift. mainly first. sometimes 2nd. and reverse. in 3rd 4th and 5th im usually good. i have been thinking this whole time bearings everybody at the shop i work at says throwout bearing too. this is including 2 people that graduated uti. no its not a mechanic shop either. but to the op what would cause that? bad syncros?

5th and rev use the same shifter fork, it may have broken or bent, or the nut on the counter shaft came loose letting things slide back.
