Default 4.0 bogging down under acceleration

my fiend has a 1994 4.0 6 cyl that is bogginging down or choking under acceleration. driving normally it doesn't happen, put once he goes to pass a car it sounds and feels like it's about to stall out. almost like its not getting enough gas and/or air to the engine. when he lets up off the gas to just keep the pace he was going everything goes back to normal. also when it does this the check engine light goes on, but goes off when it resumes normal operation. please help. thanks

could also be a sensor not allowing timing to change. etc there are a lot of things that could cause this. get an OBD scanner and software it will save you money in the long run. If you got an Android Smartphone you can get a scanner for under $25 and software for $5 on Android Market Place called Torque Pro, they have a "Free" version but it is limited.

There are ways to get codes from pre-OBDII vehicles. And there are OBDI scanners available out there when you do a search of Bing/Google/Yahoo etc.
