Unhappy Idle Drop

I have a minor problem with my Ranger (2003, FX4, 4.0). I can start the engine just fine. It drives with no problem. It even idle's fine while sitting at a stop light. HOWEVER, when I move the transmission from Drive to Park (or netural) the engine RPM will drop by about 500. There have been a few occassions where I was backing up and while turning the wheel and moving from Drive to Reverse the engine stalled. I replaced the wires and plugs (yes with Ford parts). Still, the problem persists.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Norman

Default have a check engine light?

Not sure if its quite the same problem, but my Ranger was having a large variation idling. It would be idling at 1500 at one light, and drop to 400 rpm the next signal light. My check engine light was also on though and turned out to be a huge leak in my intake manifold.

I tried replacing fuel filter and air filter as some easy fixes (check engine light originally said banks 1 and 2 running lean) but they didnt work.

Thanks everyone for your input. The fix was replacing the Idle Air Control. I went by the dealer and picked one up. It took only a few minutes to pull the old one off and install the new one. Sure enough that resolved the issue.

Yeah, I got new intake gaskets installed. Runnin good now. Still idles high untill till it seems to be warmed up ( maybe 1300). Not sure if thats normal or not, but, no more check engine light.

Thanks for responding!

Not sure if the IAC has been cleaned, but the throttle body has been cleaned. Is a new IAC expensive? I might just replace it...
