Default 93 4.0 engine sluggish problem when cold

I purchased my 93 ranger 4x4 std cab 4.0 recently. After repairing rear end bearings and brakes, I find that after I start driving my truck it is sluggish and it’s power out put is low. But after about a mile of driving it is like there is a switch turned on and the sluggishness is gone and the truck drives great. Any ideas?

Could be a litany of things but.. did you release the E-brake? J/K..
  • Any CEL at this point or have you checked for soft codes at all?
  • Do you let the truck run a minute before you throw it in gear and go?
  • Have you changed out the fuel filter?
  • Checked fuel pressure?
  • Performed a Spark test?
  • Replaced the spark plugs in the last 20k miles?
  • Checked coil pack for damage/cracked casing?
  • What oil and viscosity are you using? (could be to thick and until operating temp thins out enough)
  • Auto or manual?

Did you test drive it before the repairs? Did this start happening after you replaced the bearings and brakes?
Rule out the simple stuff first. Replace the fuel filter, spark plugs. The truck could need a cat converter being 26 years old.

No codes are showing up. I don’t drive the truck much as I purchased it to haul stuff I didn’t want to haul in my suburban. I don’t let it run very long before starting to drive it. It had the same problem before I worked on the rear axle bearings and rear brakes. The brake is adjusted properly but doesn’t want to stay pressed ( partially releases itself, Problem with e brake assembly I haven’t had time to pull out and repair yet). I have not replaced the fuel filter or checked it pressure yet. The strange part is it only is sluggish when it is cold and only for about a mile then clears up. After it clears up the truck runs great until I park it long enough for it to cool down and then I have the same problem for about a mile then runs great again.
