Default Replaceing a head gasket on a 99 4.0

I might have to have the head gasket replaced on my 99 4.0, and was wondering if it is something that I can do without any special tools or would I have to take it to a garage? This is a new engine to me as I have worked on older fords before but none this new as far as the engine goes. Thanks for any help.

I am literally in the process of dropping my 4.0 back in my '96 after a complete check/overhaul on the top end. Head gaskets and all other seals, inspection of valves, cylinder walls, etc. The only special tool I needed wasn't necessarily a specialty but not typical either. A T55 star drive for the head bolts. A good 6 point socket and wrench set in metric will get you the rest. Are you going to pull the block or work it in the truck?

It'll be a little tough but not impossible. I had a couple of other knick knacks to deal with on mine so i pulled it. Made the head gaskets cake. I forgot one thing you may have to get....if you have a Chilton book, look at the camshaft position sensor. Mine was on the very top of the block against the fire wall and kinda tucked behind the intake. The sensor itself is integrated into the oil pump drive gear. Whatever you do, try not to remove it. If you have to, mark the stator inside the sensor and make sure you maintain the position of the timing of the engine after its taken out. Not totally sure how to put it back in yet because like a fool, i yanked mine out getting in a hurry and now i have to wait on a Camshaft Sensor Synchronizer Tool that had to be special ordered before I can even consider trying to start mine back up. I'm more than sure that you can't just shove it back in and roll on about your business. Take your time, read the manual and a how-to book, and do it right. If you need a pic of location and what that sensor looks like, I've got em.

From the service manual:sorry their sideways...
There are a lot of service manuals on ebay right now, invest in one if you plan on doing your own work.

In the truck is easy. took me 15 hours to replace heads and a whole lot of another stuff.. here is the link to my build thread. whats wrong with the truck its very common to crack a head on these engines.

Zach, Had a question on the lower manifold gasket. I have gone and replaced both heads as they were both cracked (Alabama), S/P HT2244 lifters, delta rocker arms and S/P push rods. Should you still apply RTV on the engine block where the gasket goes all the way across from head to head.? The ones that were on there were Fel-Pro and of course there was RTV between. Oh and by the way I am talking about a Ford Lower Manifold gasket. Thanks S Otte

fel-pro leaked on mine even with about a whole tube of RTV on them. they where horrible. and I am not the only one to have this issue.

use the motorcraft 1 piece lower, you still place RTV on the gasket on the 4 lower corners.
