Default Coolant in the engine oil

Ok, so my buddy droped off his 2000 ranger, with the 4.0 six in it. It has coolant in the engine oil and is intermitent on starting. I checked the coolant and it looks great, there dosent seem to be oil in the coolant. What would be the most likey cause of this? crack head, cracked block or just a blown head gasket. Also are there any other quarks that I ay need to look at?

Unfortanly my friend does not have a chilton or hayes so...
Is there any detailed writed ups on how to get the heads off? I can start taring in to it be I would like to have an idea of how big the task is.

How is this write up? from what I have read most of the colgen v6 are mostly the same just the bore and stroke vary...correct?

Iam a drive train specialst, but Iam fairly good with machanics overall. Ia there any other detail that some one want to add in?

My friend has a busness trip all next week so I am not in too big a hurry to tear in to it yet.

OK update, I am home now so had a chance to actually look at the truck. The oil is just fine. The mechanic was BSing my friend. When you pull the oil fill cap it looks like a vanilla milk shake, which leads me to think that we are dealing with a PVC venting of the problem.
So tomarrow Iam taking the truck down to O' Rilys to get the codes checked.
So now Iam off to find a schmatic of the Ventilation system of the crank and valve covers. SO the probelm looks like it not a major as I was origanly told.
