you only need the cylinders bored because new parts would be going in. The displacement gained by machine work is not the point.

If you hone it and put normal size pistons/rings in, it will work. you just need a 50* cross pattern on the cylinders for the rings to wear in.

Sure, that helps a little: but look at the big picture. The reason why you would want to build a strong engine is so you can drastically increase fuel and air to the point where it really makes a difference. Supercharging/Turbocharging is the only solution. It needs to be rebuilt (and machined, because its being rebuilt) so you can take handle higher cylinder pressure and inertial loading. The stock fuel system on all of today's cars is big limiting factor also - I never turn even increase wastegate pressure on cars I work with unless its got a bigger-than-stock fuel system.

There are 2 things that limit output:
1) How much fuel can you get to the engine
2) How well is the engine built

i would have to disagree... i had a jet programer and i increased my hp by at least 10-20 but it is junk when it comes to having a custom tune... i have a 96 ranger 4.0 staight pipes. k&n cold air. port and polished heads custom tune 4:10 posi rearend upgraded fuel and oil pumps bored .20 over and she will get up and flat out go one day i would like to get her supercharged... but if im getting a motor supercharged i mys well drop a 302 in it... it also has a 5 speed tranny with stage 2 clutch and flywheel

you may think you got 10-20hp but in reality its a V6 and its from jet. i have never heard anything good from jet. sct,and some others ones i cant think of off the top of my head. but you were smart the boring .20 over and the porting and polshing and the 4.10s and the posi trac are all good the other down side is the kn intake from what ive seen and read the are worthless these trucks already have a CAI stock so why buy another one?????

By 10-20? You realize thats like saying the temperature outside is somewhere between 0 and 200 degrees. You're making up ficticious HP gains. Take it to a dyno and tell us what it really did. I suspect more in the neighborhood of 1-3 and your intake had nothing to do with it.

First thing I would do is tear the engine down and get into a shop. Make sure the block is good and also verify that the cylinder bores do/can agree with the pistons you want so you know exactly what to get. Then get the stroker kit, have a machine shop install new cam bearings, and install/balance (some offer balancing the components before shipping) the bottom end.

Just be sure to work closely with the shop that's doing the work, everything down to the material that the pistons are made of is going to contribute to how they need to do their thing. Reason I suggest a shop is if the crank needs turned or any other maintenance, they will get the right bearings. Save a lot of hassle on your end, a small mistake can turn into an epic failure.

Either a 5.0L or stroker 4.0L are going to be expensive. No way to narrow down a good estimate on what it would take for either, all depends on who you know...

Pete
