Default Check Engine warning

The Check Engine warning light is constantly on. Even when cleared it will come back on. Using my handy diagnostic thingy at home I've found that the warning is an EVAP problem. My mechanic said pin pointing the faulty spot could be a little expensive. Rather than spend money unnecessarily, he suggested that I leave it as is. That doing so will not harm the truck. Has anyone else had experience in this area?

A lot of the time an evap leak will be caused by a faulty gas cap, replace that and clear the code.

I've already tried a new gas cap. Guess I could buy a different brand and give it another shot though. If there is a leak, what is your opinion on whether it will harm the truck if left as is?

Not sure on that, it could be a vacuum hose that is either cracked, or disconnected. You could experience a poor running engine and low gas mileage.

I would try to get it fixed regardless if that particular issue can be left as-is. What if another CEL code is triggered? Your check engine light would already be on, so unless you periodically check the codes you would have no way of knowing something else went haywire.
