Default Cold Air Intake

Haven't owned my Ranger very long but would like to clean/change the intake filter. Someone told me it can be cleaned. Is that true? Or, do I need to change it out? If so, does anyone have recommendations where online to purchase one? Or do auto parts stores stock them? Thanks....

Some can be cleaned, but I doubt your stock filter can be. K&N drop in replacements can be cleaned and oiled using their kits. Your local auto parts store should stock a K&N.

do you have cold air intake like your title states, or a stock drop in filter?

Good question above but if not...

Drop a K&N in and forget about it. Maybe take it out every once in a while to shake it out if you got a lot of junk in the box. They are worth the money (give or take $50). You will never have to buy another filter again.

My apologies for any confusion, guess I didn't explain myself very well. I'm only speaking of maintenance on the cone shaped air filter. Since I'm fairly new to these trucks I will do some research and re-post my question later. Thanks for your responses.

you can replace the filter and do a quick mod on the box, dont buy a CAI, you already got it

you stock set up is a very efficient cold air intake, a very good one. and as many have shown here the oil bathed k&N drop in filter actually will cost you performance, it is more restrictive than the stock paper style filter

No it's not. It's less restrictive than the stock filter. The only thing is is that the K&N puts more crap in your engine because they don't filter as well as the paper filters.

Correct me if I,m wrong but I didn't think cone shaped filters were stock on the newer rangers and your truck looks newer. I'm assuming then that the cone shaped filter you are referring to is some sort of an aftermarket CAI.

I'm also going to assume you have CAI based on this post... try to find out the manufacturer of the CAI, and follow the manufacturer's recommendation on the air filter, some can be washed, others cannot so just double check what you have and google will be your friend

I think what it comes down to is that when you weigh the pros and cons of K&N vs Stock you will prob be pretty even but the seller for me on the K&N was not having to worry about changing the filter every 5-10,000 miles I No longer have to factor in a $12+/- air filter for routine maintenance. Not much but IMO I believe the k&N has paid for itself with me.
