Default Bucking/Jerking

I did a search and found other threads similar, but not really what I'm having an issue with - so I apologize if this is an old topic or has been covered somewhere I didn't see it.

This has happened to me more than a few times now, and to others driving my truck, as well. It runs great through all gears and decelerates fine. The problem is every once in a while, while accelerating from a stop (stop light/sign/or pulling out of the driveway/parking lot), the truck jerks and shakes for about 2 seconds and then I notice the overdrive has turned off (I was told to always drive with the overdrive on, yay or nay?). Pushing the button to turn it on again does nothing after this. I have to stop the truck, put it in park, turn it off, then turn it back on and the overdrive is back on until the next time it does this little fit.

It does this regardless of whether it's on a hill or not. It has done the jerking, without turning the overdrive off, while on the highway and while I was passing someone.

I'm completely new to trucks. This is only my second vehicle; I had my Toyota Matrix for 5 years before trading it in in October for the truck.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I apologize, again, if this was in the wrong spot. And for being rather long.

Maybe I'm the one confused but I thought I read in the manual that you push the overdrive button to turn OFF the overdrive like when your pulling a trailer with a heavy load ...And the overdrive light is a reminder to turn on the overdrive for better mileage when not towing.. Am I right or wrong on this?

You are correct. When you start your truck and put it in drive, it's actually in overdrive. You are only supposed to turn overdrive off (using the button on the end of the shift lever) when you are driving on really hilly roads, or towing a large load.

Yes, it flashes.

At all other times, I can push the button and turn the overdrive off, then push it again and the overdrive light goes off, but not after it's done this jerking/bucking after accelerating. The truck has to be parked and turned off, then re-started.

go to a tranny shop/ford dealer and they will pull the code for you and tell you what needs to be fixed

sounds like the lockup torque converter is messing up. if the OD off light is flashing it will def have a code that a trans shop can read for you

Thank you! I'll take it to the transmission shop and get it checked.
