Idle speed
 
What is the normal idle speed for a V6? Mine is about 900, but I've read that some have it at 700.

mine is at 1200 rpms. is there a way to change that? what could cause it to idle so high? its a 4.0:eek:

There is a screw at the end of the throttle cable in the engine bay. Depending which way it is turned, it increases or decreases the RPM's at idle. I just want to know the accurate number to have it adjusted.

Rangers don't have set screws, we have iac's

Understood. But there is a screw at the end of the throttle cable where you can adjust the spring tension. If you take up some slack off the cable, it will rev the engine at a higher speed at idle.

my last 2 stock 4L rangers ran around 600RPM (auto trans 2wd) my current with comp cam runs around 800.

My 2 explorers stock 4L average about 600RPM (auto trans 4X4)

God question. My stock 3.0 idles at about 1000. After reading this it seems kinda high compared to some others.

Which end? Did your truck have a previous owner? Neater of the ends of my cable has a screw on it. One end has a green thing that has a spring on it to attach the throttle cable to the pedal, but that's it.

Which end? Did your truck have a previous owner? Neater of the ends of my cable has a screw on it. One end has a green thing that has a spring on it to attach the throttle cable to the pedal, but that's it.
Check the other end in the engine bay. The screw is not on the cable but below the holder where the cable sits in. You can adjusted how far the spring will retract. Counter clockwise will allow the rpm's to rise at idle.

the IAC is what controlls the idle speed. you should never have to adjust the little screw on the throttle body.

Mine idles at ~500-600RPM. Sounds like it's about to stall :P

don't mess with it. the computer controls the engine idle (via IAC valve), period, not a set screw. if the screw hasn't been tampered with, and the idle is high, there is something wrong. that screw sets the base TPS voltage, don't fiddle with it. not a carburetor.
