Default White smoke coming out exhaust

I have a 98 ford ranger with the 4.0 and about 190000km on it. It pours out white smoke and anti-freeze leaks out of the muffler. Is it more common on these trucks for it to be a head gasket failure or a cracked head?

thats not antifreeze thats coming out the tailpipe....just condensation and yes white smoke out the tailpipe is a sign that a head gasket is bad/cracked head...what does the oil look like?

There isn't any moisture in the oil. I didn't think it would be anti-freeze but it sure looked green leaking from the slit in the bottom of the muffler.

then it may just be normal condensation coming out of the tailpipe...happens when it gets colder outside...run a compression check to make sure...does the ''smoke'' go away when the engines warm? whats the power like with the motor?

If its green, its antifreeze. And yes, the 4.0 ohv motor is notorious for having warped heads, cracked heads or bad head gasket issues.

If your exhaust smells sweet (glycol) and is white smoke, you need to monitor your coolant levels and start looking into a head job.

My grandpa was merging onto the highway with it and I guess it stared blowing mass amounts of smoke. Then when he stopped the engine died. He cranked it 14 times and it started up but continued to be a moving smoke machine. When I started it up to take a look there was for sure anti-freeze coming out the bottom of the muffler, it was making a puddle. When others come across this situation do they usually just replace the heads or do they drop In a new motor?

It depends on the extent of the damage, honestly. Either way, its not cheap.

I dont think you would need to go all out for new heads, but you'll need to take them out, take them to a machine shop and get them to do a compression test on it. I would guess that you DO NOT need new heads, they just needs to be resurfaced. Unless they're cracked, then you will need new ones. And I'm sure the machine shop would suggest the resurfacing too because they want your business, lol.

Clean those heads up real good, get them looked at and get new heads/resurfacing (whatever you decide), get new gaskets and you're good to go.

Also, this may be a good time to start looking at the cooling components of your engine. There is a reason your truck started all this in the first place. Could it be that it got hot? thermostat not working properly? water pump still pumping? radiator clean, working? Or maybe the gaskets were just getting old? You know the regular stuff. The last thing you want is to get this work done and it get hot on ya again and crack or warp another head.

Look up Alabama cylinder head if you're looking to replace them

Check out Zach's how-to regarding head replacement on a 4.0 OHV engine. That would probably explain quite a bit regarding the process. If you have coolant coming out of the exhaust system, you definitely have a blown head gasket, or a blown lower intake gasket; more than likely it's the former. It's an involved job (replacing head gaskets in a 4.0), but if you are mechanically inclined, it isn't something that would be too challenging.

Uh, smoke less weed?

If you meant exhaust, not windows, that is usually a sign of a leaking head gasket ir intake manifold gasket.

That doesn't make any sense.

If he's melting the tires doin burnouts, smoke sometimes tends to accumulate in the cab... you know what... idk, I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm talking out of my ass here. I'm not the one who posted a comment that had nothing to do with the thread. Lol

That would be smoke coming IN the windows, not out.
