Default Re: Rough Idle, hesitation on acceleration, loss of power

Looks like I have a very similar problem. I can drive my truck 10-20 miles fine but then if it sits 10 minutes it barely idles and will stall out. Maybe you can get it to rev up a bit by pumping but then it backfires or coughs and quits. Have to wait an hour then it runs fine. My EGR and DPFE(?) have been disconnected for years (It pulsated and had EGR code but I was afraid I was going to break the pipe taking it off).

I have put in new plugs 10k ago. So far I have tried new wires, coil, fuel filter. The fuel pressure was only 31 off and 28 running and about 31 with vacuum line removed. Measured temp sensors, cleaned MAF. Forgot what the MAF reads but it did go up when I rev'd it.

Today I got an Explorer PCM from the junkyard and tried it. It ran but when it got hot it started to cut out. It shifted differently, didn't rev up when starting like mine always has. Anyway I barely made it home. I jumped out and quickly installed the original PCM and it barely ran. It may not have been a perfect test but I think it rules out the PCM.

Wish I knew what to test or replace.

Its extremely crucial that you use the same PCM for your make and model. The ECMs usually have the part number on them and you must match that number otherwise it won't run right. So I wouldn't completely rule out the PCM/ECM. I changed cats and O2s, checked the MAF, TPS, IAC, vacuum leaks, changed the fuel pump, and all was good but still continued to have same issues. I was stumped so I bought a cheap OBD1 scanner for my ranger and got a 159 code which is MAF sensor out of test range. After a little more research and reading about other folks having the same issue everything pointed towards the ECM. I removed my ECM removed the two torx screws off the sides and removed the cover and found my problem. I'll post a picture later but I have an almost melted transistor but definately burnt connection. So if I would at the very least take a real close look at your ECM again before you rule it out.

Well I'd like to say thank you to all who gave me the ideas you did they were all valid ideas and all made sense however I did finally after a month find the problem with my ranger. It turns out it was indeed the ECM. Took about 20 min to replace, Ranger runs perfect, smooth, and extremely responsive. Not sure it this helps but in the future I would advise everying to perform a vaccum test on your vehicle that will tell you a lot about the engine itself. When it comes to electrical, and it may be a hassel and inconvinent for many but always check the ECM. I do have another minor issue but will have to go on a another thread this one should be finalized for many with the same problem to reference thanks FRF community!!

I have a 05 Ranger Edge with the 4.0 5 speed auto 115.000 miles and I am experiencing very rough idle! Changed the coil and gained power for sure! New plugs plug wires! I have a IPS I am going to put on tomorrow but I hear what sounds like a vacume leak when I hit the gas under the hood but cant see anything. Any ideas?Mite be nothing!
