Default Oil pressure gauge?

Is it possible for the gauge to go bad? Or a sensor? At higher rpms my gauge bottoms out or flutters but when i let off its fine. Also sometimes at a stop the gauge flutters but if i bump it into netural its fine. Any ideas whats wrong? Thanks

Default Re: Oil pressure gauge?

Yeah, it's not a true gauge as above said, ford puts dummy gauges in their newer vehicles, as long as it's within a certain range it reads in the middle (unless you mod it)
I just replaced one on someone else's vehicle and it was like a $7 part for the switch.

The sockets were the hardest part ( I had to measure the original and replacement with a caliper as both were diff diameters, then rummage around in local used tool socket bin. Both needed Deep well metric sockets of rather large diameters (like 22/23 or so)

when you put the replacement in, If it doesn't have any compound on the threads you'll want to pick up sensor safe high temp thread compound.

If that doesn't work you'll want an oil pressure test kit, then if oil pressure tests fine you'd want to deal with tearing off the dash to test the gauge itself (HUGE PITA)

Given the switch does tend to fail and is compared to the tool/removing the cluster, is a situation I recommend throwing a part at a problem as at most it will out you approx $8 gauge $5 compount + maybe sockets. while the oil pressure test tool + fittings would be much more.
