pros please help urgent engine issue
Ok truck is 2004 fx4 level 2 4.0L. now the truck was acting up it was missing but when you put your foot to the mat it would correct the problem and pull you into your seat again. now it suddenly started to die sputtered to a stop on the side of the road. it started again barely and it was smoking white so first thought was obviously is coolant made its wat into the cylinders one way or another and there was a dark grey soot in the tail pipe. now i limped it into town to the gas station and on the way it died as if the engine siezed (its not) it immediatly died this time. now it turn over but it does not sound the same you could say it whines when you turn it over. i held it over for about 10-15 seconds and heard a cylinder fire once or twice but thats it.fuel pump works. there must be some type of spark and im sure there is air some one please for the love of god help.

----------
would the fuel filter really cause it to die that abruptly and violently? but when i turn it over you can smell the fuel im fairly positive its getting fuel but ill give it a shot any other solutions?

Codes? See if you can pull a code because it could be anything fuel, spark or air related.

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
alright stored codes are as follows:
Evap emission system leak (large leak) p0455
o2 sensor signal biased/ stuck lean bank2 sensor 1 p2197
fuel cap loose/ off (thats because of a pin hole in the filler neck) p0457
system too lean bank 1 p0171
system too lean bank 2 p0174
Pending codes are as follows:
cylinder 6 misfire detected
now also i never added before when i crank it over it sounds totally different like a whineing sound i guess you could descibe it as. and immediatly when i turned the key there was a back fire so there has to be some sort or spark.

So your truck is running lean. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem to me. I would replace your fuel filter anyway, it cant hurt.

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
P0171 and P0174 can be a failed PCV elbow and/or clogged PCV valve. I changed both when those codes hit and it resolved the problem. The 02 sensor I believe that you are looking for is on the passenger side, next to the engine. You can access this through the wheel well. You'll need a 22mm box wrench to change it. The issue of detonation means that you'll have to change plugs. Since the SOHC is an interference engine, hopefully you didn't leave an electrode behind that could be punched through a piston top. To be on the safe side, take a magnet and stick it in through your spark-plug port and see what you pick up; that is if #6 plug is damaged when you pull it. Hopefully, it's just changing a few things and you're good to go.

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
Our engines (SOHC 4.0 and OHV 4.0) aren't belt timed. They're pretty darn complex as a matter of fact. They use guides (plastic; why????) and a jack shaft (something introduced by the Brits and Zie Germans back in the 60's/70's on their OHC cars. Anyhow, detonation in our engines is usually the result of component failure, an incorrect mixture or a sensor not working correctly. I'd imagine that there are other causes too.

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
Alright the engine is showing no compresion at all. Now correct me if I'm wrong but my engine is an interference engine (I believe that's what its called) and if the timing goes my valves would be stuck open therfore showing no compression am I right in saying this? If so what is going to be the best way to correct this problem whether its putting in a new engine or what?

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
Do you have any resistance when you turn the crankshaft manually? BTW, do not turn the crankshaft counter clockwise as this will affect the rear chain tensioner. When you pulled your plugs, what did they look like?
Have you checked the OHM resistance on your fuel pump and MAF, and are they within range? What about the PCU, have you checked that for failure?
And yes, the SOHC 4.0 is an interference engine
Right now might be the time to look around for an available SOHC 4.0. I live on Oahu and have found several at our junkyards. Depending on where you live, you should be able to locate one.
Hopefully this isn't something major that would require you to pull the engine. If it is, there's a pretty helpful series of videos, about 40 mins worth of Youtube, that shows you how to pull a SOHC 4.0.

The OHV isn't nearly as complex. What ford did wit the jackshaft was use the OHV block and run a jackshaft trough where the camshaft went on the OHV 4.0 so that they could power the oil pump I believe. And the jackshaft runs to the camshaft above.
Im pretty sure all timing chain guides are made of some type of polycarbonite. Just the ones on the 01-03 4.0s were tricky because they would wear down prematurely on a random 4.0s.

Re: pros please help urgent engine issue
Alright so lets say timing guide went or something along those lines and my pistons ran into the valves and probably bent them, what are the chances of really only needing to replace the valves and would that be a better choice than replaceing the motor? Seen as i would be taking it into a shop to have this done as i dont have time to deal with it myself would it be cheaper to rebuild or replace. I have another engine that has 30,000
kms on it or so im told, i have not purchased it yet and it would cost $1000 CDN. so please anyone that has an opinion on this please feel free to coment on this situation. Also the catalitic converter was plugged which in this case caused the missfires before the engine failure.
