UPDATE through a hands on teardown , the problem was a blown intake gasket. After replacement ,a good clean new thermo,plugs & wires,oil and coolant change and recharge of the K&N filter.my red ranger is on the road and as ready as ever

yes they can be done in the truck, a pain to get to but able to be done
