Default Temp gauge engine light

On my way home the temp gauge went to cold and engine light went on.Everything is working fine coolant good heat good.when start vehicle gauge does not move.Fuse good.would temp sending unit cause light to go on and which unit is it.4.0liter 02 ford ranger thanks for help.
