Default 2003 Ranger vacuum leak

My 4.0L 4wd Ranger gives me a check engine light and a trouble code for a vacuum leak (391, 394). Is it possible that the pcv valve could be creating this? Also, I was informed that repalcing oxygen sensors may solve this issue. Is that true? Any other advice would be appreciated. My code identifier does not reference the oxygen sensors. It does sak vacuum leak on bank 1 and bank 2. ???????

no i don;t think it would be O2 seneors, that would not make any sense, when under the hood try to hear any noise and also check all bolts

Thank you for the assistance. I apologize because my memory is faulty. I stated the error codes were 391 and 394. Actually, they are 191 and 194.

Yes, my vacuum leak was also about a 1" tear in the pcv elbow. Pissed me off when I found ford required the entire thing to be replaced when a rubber elbow would have done the trick. One more rip off from the rip offs. FYI, I broke the right cable on my ranger tailgate. Ford wanted $34.00 to replace the cable.............found on-line for as low as 10.00. I did the latter and it is exactly the same.

I'm going to the junk yard for my new elbow, if Ford charges more than $15 for a new one......for the time being I took it off....cleaned it good with carb cleaner.....let it dry and wrapped it beautifully in electrical tape.....works like a charm.

If it is the PCV line from the PCV on the back of the drivers side valve cover to just under the throttle body. I would recomend replacing the entire line with rubber heater hose. The line has three rubber elbows and if you replace just one now your going to run into the same problem later. 24" of heater hose is about $8 and it is a permanent fix. Out of curiosity were the codes P0171 and P0172 . Those are the codes for lean in bank 1 and bank 2?

Your right about how to fix it.....but now that I know what to look for I'm just going to monitor them.......as to the codes they were: P0171 and P0174.....lean bank one and lean bank 2......

That's got to be a very common problem...I've never seen an elbow hose that size, used for vacuum, crack like that....

I'm suprised how few responses I got from the original post....oh well

Same thing on mine last year. That vac line rots out and breaks eventually and causes those exact codes.

I am having the same issue on my 2003 edge 3.0 V6. $50 for the elbow with the breather tube. They also wanter $15 for the PCV. $3 at autozone. When replacing the hose with the breather tub doyou just bend it as you pull it out??? or do you have to take the cover, etc off of the throttle body???

Same thing happend to me... I assumed my fix would be expensive so I never even really looked for anything. found the crack when replaced my pcv. I found an elbow at Auto Zone that fit for a dollar.

I may go back and use heater hose to eliminate all the other elbows.

what codes are you getting? Did you search my threads and see the one on adaptive fuel diagnostics? It will basically solve this problem for you. Too bad the mods around here never saw the value and stickied it.

Adaptive Fuel DTCs Diagnostic Techniques (P0171/P0174)
