Default 3.0 to 4.0 swap

Okay i have a 95 ranger 4x4 speed 3.0L and i have a 4.0L out of an explorer i want to put in. i believe it is a direct bolt in. but i wanted to know if i have to change the ECM or not? i know that the ECM for both a 3.0L and 4.0L are in the same location and look the same. but i want to know if i have to get a 4.0 ecm or if i can just use my 3.0 wiring harness and ecm. Help me?

3.0 and 4.0 have different bolt patterns at the transmission bellhousing, so you can't swap engines without also swapping the transmissions. Depending on the year of the donor, there could be other problems as well.

you should be able to get an adapter for the 4.0 to bolt to the trans you already have

my main worry with this swap would be if your donor vehicle had PATS (passive anti-theft security) which could add a whole other set of problems

Manuals have the bellhousing integral to the transmission case so that would require a trans swap or a case swap. 4.0 manuals also come from the factory with a different set of gear ratios compared to the 2.3 and 3.0.

Automatics use a bolt on bellhousing that will physically swap between the two transmssions. However, compared to the 3.0L version, the 4.0L trans internals are upgraded for the added torque of the larger engine. Ford doesn't have the confidence to use the 3.0 trans guts behind the 4.0L. Neither would I.

the 4.0 is out of a 93 or 94 explorer. it has the 5 speed and the t-case, i was planning on changing it all. i can get the harness and ecu for 100bucks from the junk yard, so since i have everything to swap i figured i wont have very many problems..we'll see

Lots of differences between 94 and 95. Here are some that I can think of off the top of my head. There are probably more:
  • Connection of the engine harness to the body harness. 94 has a number of smaller connectors vs one large 42 pin in 95.
  • 94 used a cable driven speedometer, 95 is by electric Signal Generator.
  • 94 is OBD/60 pin EEC-IV, 95 Ranger is OBDII/104 pin EEC-V
  • Electric transfer cases: 94 used a Shift Control Module with individual push buttons, 95 has single switch controlling through the GEM by changing voltage levels.

I'm sure that all of these can be overcome but it won't be plug and play.
