OHV-overhead valve- operated by pushrods
SOHC-single overhead cam

It makes a difference. You have OHV. as stated before, the 4.0 SOHC didnt come out untill around 2001.

you have a 165 HP motor
should have gotten the 2001+ SOHC = 207 HP.

they ask because there where two different 4.0's and the parts guys usually dont know the difference. you have a OHV. 165hp and 225ft Lb of torque at like 2500. the 4.0 sohc has more power and torque but it doesnt have the low end that the OHV 4.0 had.

This. The intake is engine specific. It's not worth their time to research the history of all the various vehicles to find out that the 4.0 SOHC was introduced in 2001. So thus they ask if you have an SOHC or OHV.

I'm curious what you would see if you select a 98 SOHC though. My guess is it would say nothing available.

Nope, the sohc runs 3 timing chains so has a lot of changes. The transmissions dont swap between the 2 either.

The SOHC and OHV were used on the explorers in that year so that is why you will see them as options in the aftermarket. Since they share so many parts.
