Default Automatic Transmision Question

Hi guy's. I have a Ford Ranger 4.0L v6 SOHC XLE D/C 4WD 2004 5-Speed ATM ( 1-2-D-N-R-P )

What gears am I suppose to get when I select 1'st and 2'nd?
When I put it in 1'st, I get 1'st and 2'nd gear.
When I put it in 2'st, I get 3'rd gear.
Does not make sense? Any Idea?

talked this over with my dad and mom bumped in and said that you have transmission problems Now seriously me and my dad think that your linkages need adjusted.

Thank for the reply, I just want to correct my statment:
When I put in 2'nd, I get 1'st and 2'nd
When I put it in 1'st, I get 1'st and 2'nd.
The problem is that 1'st does not stay (lock) in 1'st. There is quite an amount of play in 1'st.

Is this linkages inside or outside the gearbox?

The linkages are on the outside of the trans. it could also be the gear selector is out of kilter.

Not sure what Ford did to the global platform, but as long as the OD light isn't flashing at you the truck is fine.
