4.0 knocking and clicking noise
2000 ohv- 73000 miles. At idle it honestly sounds like a rod knocking- but when you give it any gas at all or drive it the noise stops immediately. oil pressure is perfect and the oil was just changed. also- driving it around town it clicks sometimes like the ac is on and you can kind of feel the engine bog- bit obviously the ac isnt on
thanks

If it goes away when it warms up after a few minutes, I'd put my money on a belt tensioner or idle pulley. Both very easy replacements.

The 4.0 will do that its just something to deal with, I got my truck when it had 52,000 miles on it and its done it to this day. I have tried everything to stop it, and i mean everything. A good friend of mine who is a "Ford wrench man" told me its just valve chatter.

Re: 4.0 knocking and clicking noise
I know its been awhile since the last post but, I too have this issue. To add to it when I idle and its banging like a heartbeat, when I shut it off, it continues to bang for little while. Anybody have anything else?

Re: 4.0 knocking and clicking noise
Mine sounds like a diesel every now and then. I was told it's carbon interference and to drive at an rpm over 3000 for about 10 minutes and use a good Techron cleaner. It helps, but always comes back.

Re: 4.0 knocking and clicking noise
Mine does this as well. Same noise, on the drivers side mostly, a knock at idle.
My mechanic said... "its a ford, when it quits ticking or knocking....then worry"
so i just let it be.

Re: 4.0 knocking and clicking noise
4.0l ohv has bad rocker arms and push rods and non harded seats. It causes wear on the push rods and rocker seat. Which causes a clatter at idle.

Banging that's a bigger issue

What is meant by this, did you hook up a real, mechanical oil pressure gauge or are you making reference to the one on the dash, which does nothing more than read midscale when the oil pressure is 5-7psi (ie, idiot gauge)? Regardless, the old OHV 4.0's were very vulnerable to some slop in the wrist pins, my old OHV 4.0 did it starting around 40K, it's very commonplace, so common in fact that Ford issued a TSB on the subject (no free replacement engines to customers over this issue). The upshot is, it doesn't affect longevity and it's not a reliability concern (FWIW, I proved that with 182K one-owner miles).

Re: 4.0 knocking and clicking noise
I don't know the exact year it ended, it did apply initially to earlier ones, I learned about it back around 01 or 02. Wendle Ford Service Department and Gus Johnson Ford service department in Spokane, WA were sources I visited in person to talk to about the issue, a very widespread one at that.

I was talking to a buddy about this (noisy OHV 4.0's) over the weekend and he remembered another issue. Ford kicked up a TSB to cover the late OHV's (possibly 98-00?) with a noise about identical to the wrist pin issue (soft knock, "marbling"), in fact, the root cause for both is about the same (engine assembly using parts with tolerances that are at extremities). Seems like Ford revised the pistons for the final years of the engine and in certain cases (tol's as noted earlier) the skirts slapped around in the cyl a bit. That would worry me. Ford told customers it's normal; I've never personally seen the inside of a high mile 4.0 that had the sound nor heard of an issue (ie, oil consumption) failure because of it, but if there were any I'd be all ears to hear details.
