Default Alternator Ticking?

New To the Forums glad to be here i see alot of ford junkies here

Odd question

My other half has a 98 explorer sport 4.0OHV

The other day i noticed a ticking, strangely enough it sound like its coming from the inside of the alternator, shes running 2 polk 12's 4000 watt amp, so maybe the alternators just worn out, the truck just rolled 175K on the ODO have no idea if anythings ever been replaced, i just did the spark plugs all the wiring changed the air filter, new shocks sway bars.

Drove it yesterday on a beer run came up to a stop sign noticed it started choking and stalled out on me, as i was pressing the brakes, on acceleration noticed it was hesitant and slight choking. When it stalled the very first light i noticed was the battery light, then everything else came on as if you have it on accessory or on without engine running.

Scares me i hope she didnt ruin a valve or something, just thought it was strange noticed the ticking off the alternator, would that cause the truck to sputter like that, doesnt do it often at all very rarely, in the past year happened maybe 3 times.

The only other thing that got me was when its idling or slight acceleration it makes a humming noise

The battery light is going to come on as soon as the engine stalls out, that's normal. If it was on BEFORE the engine stalled, that is different. Need to know the voltage with the engine running and the engine off.

12.3 Off
13.87 Running

Might not be the alternator, sounds more like a bearing inside of it or even the pulley, havnt had any problems dropping voltage even with the system on, no dimming

That is normal voltage. So the ticking could be something else.

Thats what scares me, i know you can take off the serpentine belt and run the truck, of course not for long, but is their anything i should know before doing that?

Thought it was a good idea just to not spin the alternator, to see if the noise still occurs, possibly a knocking bearing in the alternator

Much appreciated for your input
