Default What will fit?? 4.0 SOHC

I just bought a 2004 Ranger with a SOHC 4.0 Engine. Engine has a dead whole... zero comp.

If I was willing to transfer all external parts... What year engine will work?

I know they came out with the SOHC engine in the Explorers much earlier.
Can I use these earlier engines? I know I will need to transfer external parts IE Sensors, Injectors, Acc brackets etc.

Thanks for the help.

Try to get the same year or newer, 2002's and older were known for timing chain issues. However, if the money is right on an older low mileage one, replace the timing sets before installing you could still be ahead.

local Salvage yards want $1000 & Up for a 03 or newer engine. I can buy a 1999 or 2000 for under $500.00

I just need to know the older engine will work. I can transfer my Timing parts to the other engine if needed.

Thank you

I think it will work but I would buy a new timing set.

2001 through 2011 Ranger use the exact same long block. I had a buddy that put a 2011 Ranger motor in his 2002. 2005 through 2010 Mustangs are the same as well. I just finished installing a 2006 Mustang 4.0 in my 2001. Not entirely sure about Explorers, but my understanding is that any 4.0 SOHC engine should be the same. You will have to use all your current exterior engine parts and sensors.

AWESOME... Thats what I figured. Just needed confirmation. I will ad the Mustang to my search as well.

Thank you very much.
